ABOUT

REA SAXENA (they/she) is a multimedia artist based on the unceded, ancestral and traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) nations.

Rea plays with hand processed & destructive analogue filmmaking techniques paired with fast-paced rhythmic editing. They often work in the physical, analogue compositions (cyanotype printmaking, Hi-8 tape, 16mm and Super 8 film) before the inevitable re-creation in the metaphysical digital render. Rea often reflects on the intersections of old/new media, queerness, and cultural dysphoria.

Their films have been featured across Canada at WNDX Festival of the Moving Image, XINEMA, WUFF (Winnipeg Underground Film Festival), and Capture Photography Film Festival. She holds a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Film, Video, and Integrated Media. Rea has taught several workshops around colonially-named “Vancouver” at Slice of Life, Cineworks, Echo Park Film Centre North, and at Still Moon Arts Society.
